Dysport vs Botox? What’s the difference?

At Selora Med Spa, we believe beautiful results start with understanding our client’s anatomy and ensuring our clients understand all options for their concerns.

I want to break down the difference between Dysport and Botox. Both are injectable neurotoxins made from botulinum toxin type A. They work by temporarily relaxing targeted facial muscles that are responsible for the repetitive expressions we make resulting in those pesky fine lines and wrinkles on our faces and even our neck!

As a board-certified physician assistant who has specialized in aesthetics, I explain to my clients that these neurotoxins are made by two different companies. I use the analogy of all the different pharmacies in our area- CVS pharmacy, Wegmans Pharmacy, Tops Pharmacy, Walgreens Pharmacy. Some clients have a preference if they have received a specific brand in the past that worked well for them but the majority of clients trust the providers to chose what they feel would work best for them.

The goal is to give your face and/or neck a refreshed look, soften the unwanted lines and wrinkles, while still maintaining a natural look. Common treatment areas include the following which we offer here at Selora Med Spa. Forehead lines, Frown lines “11’s” in between your eyebrows, crow’s feet, brow lift for heavy upper lids, bunny lines (on the nose), nose crease lines, lip flip, gummy smile, DAO (turn up the corners of the mouth and can help with the appearance of jowls), Platysmal bands (neck bands), jawline, chin dimpling, nasal flaring, Nefertiti lift, masseters (clenching/TMJ), trapezius muscle (tension and slimming of the shoulder/neck muscles) and many other expression-related wrinkles. Dysport and Botox can be used to treat all of these areas.

A few Key Differences Between Botox and Dysport

  • 1. How quickly do they work? This is a very common question we hear every day from our clients.

Dysport: Some clients begin to notice improvement in 2-3 days.

Botox: Initial results tend to become more noticeable in 3-5 days.

Both treatments: Optimal results are 3 weeks!

  • 2. How Long Do results Last?

Both Dysport and Botox results typically last 3-4 months. Consistent treatments can help to weaken the targeted muscles and maintain smoother- looking, refreshed skin over time.

With all neurotoxins, results can vary due to the following factors: Individual metabolism, sun exposure, muscle strength and activity, dosage, as well as your exercise program.

    • 3. Do they spread differently?

The simple answer is YES! Dysport and Botox have different formulas and diffusion characteristics.

Dysport: Works beautifully for broader coverage

Botox: May be desirable for a more targeted treatment

However, the experience of the injector, dosage, anatomy, and placement are just as important as the choice of product itself!

    • 4. Are the Units Different?

YES! This is one of the biggest misconceptions about neurotoxins from every brand that are available now. Dysport and Botox units are NOT interchangeable. Dysport typically requires at least 2x more units then Botox.

    • 5. Are the Prices of Dysport and Botox Different?

Yes, they often are a different price per unit. ie Dysport $7.50/unit and Botox $15/unit. However the overall cost of the treatment is often comparable because Dysport requires more units.

So, when a client comes into see me for a “Tox” consult for Dysport or Daxxify and they say “I had 10 units of Botox in my forehead with my last injector at ……” there is never an assumption made on my end for # of units I will use. Instead, as a physician assistant who specializes as an aesthetic injector, I will do a thorough consultation. I will see what your face and neck muscles do at rest and with animation. I will, as I call it “map out” all of the injection sites with a white eyeliner pencil. I will take photos at rest and with animation for your chart. Finally, then I will decide on the # of units of either Dysport or Daxxify (my personal favorite neurotoxins we offer at our medspa). Finally, I will answer all of your questions and give you the cost of the treatment prior to moving forward. No surprises here at Selora Med Spa! I just want to get you your perfect “recipe” for results!

We hope you will come experience the Selora Difference with us!
